If travel is inevitable for a lady who is expecting, then insurance is absolutely mandatory for her. There are several risks to a pregnant woman while she travels. There may be epidemics that might jeopardize her health and of the one she’s carrying. Also, the means of travel have their own dangers. You must take all these into account before leaving for a trip.

Most insurance will cover you up to the 28th week only. But if you acquire the right kind of awareness and attitude, you will be able to travel up till the 34th week of your pregnancy. But you must be prepared to run around a lot because there are seldom insurance houses that would be willing to take up that kind of risk.

The first thing to take into account is the mode of transportation. Cars are no problem. Bus tours are OK to take in this period. However, if the region is hilly and rocky, there is increased difficulty. Trains and boats also do not pose much of danger. Flying is the most hazardous way to travel in this condition. Apart from the anticipated risks of turbulence and crashes, the pressure in the air is different and the lady as well as the baby might be able to cope with it. It might complicate the delivery and lead to premature one. Many airlines do not even let women travel after a certain stage of pregnancy.

Do not try and scrimp on insurance on pregnancy. This is a period that you should take chances with at all. Even if you are getting a cheap deal, stick to what gives you peace of mind.

If you do decide to push the boundaries and travel late into the pregnancy, check the facilities in the country you are visiting. Chances are you might end up having your baby there. So gather sufficient information about how your insurance will help in this situation. Ask whether cashless facility is available. Child birth is generally a very chaotic event. You may not be able to arrange cash for the bills immediately. Along the same lines, check out what the nursing facilities there.

The most important fact here is that many policies cover only traveling risks. To ensure you are not stuck in a situation where the flight is insured but you are left vulnerable after that. Be absolutely clear about the terms of your insurance and how far they will cover you. If your travel insurance falls on some aspects, it is best to bet another health policy just for your pregnancy.

There are some conditions under which no company offers coverage:
1)    Companies will not cover you if the nature if conception is not natural. If there is any kind of medical intervention, no claims can be made on coverage. Only natural pregnancies are covered.
2)    If you have had a previous pregnancy that was difficult.
3)    If you already have some complications.

Remember that health insurance is not synonymous with pregnancy insurance. Also, if you end up delivering abroad, see whether your new-born is covered.
