Status of Gas based Power Projects requiring 500 mmscmd in 12th-13th Plan with Annexure

Report Summary

Gas is one of the major sources of thermal power for the country. It has a share of about 11% in our generation mix at present. Despite its importance and high demand, availability of the resource is grim. Supply of gas for the power sector has always remained a matter of concern to the stakeholders which includes power developers, financers and EPC contractors. With the recent discoveries, in the country such as KG-D6, the present scenario of gas availability has improved. However, it is still far short of the future demand. The improved availability has attracted a number of sectoral players to enter into the business; this includes projects which originally were planned as coal based.

The gas allocation policy is yet to be finalized, and in its absence gas has been allocated by EGoM to existing projects (including 2009-10 projects). As a matter of fact, even for projects under construction and likely to be commissioned during 2010 -11, no gas has been allocated. Also, there has been no indication by MoPNG (Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas) about availability of gas for new power projects. As per Infraline research, CEA has received request for gas allocation for new projects totaling to about 99291 MW with total requirement of about 488 mmscmd. The details of requested capacity are as follows

Expansion Projects
Greenfield Projects Total
Installed Capacity
18705 MW
80588 MW
99291
Gas Requirement
90.46
398.02
488.48
These projects are under various stages clearances including land acquisition, water availability, MoEF clearance etc. InfralineEnergy in its latest report has provided a comprehensive compilation of the details of the 78 Gas based Power Projects along with the gas requirement and status of clearances and development.
