Before you think about using a sunbed to give yourself a bronzed glow this summer, you might want to check the latest facts about the damage that these machines can do.
It is well established that they put you at risk of cancer, premature aging, and skin damage. But did you know that you can also become addicted to them? Trials in New York found have just that one in three sunbed users became hooked. And what’s more, many of these addicts were also found to be heavy drinkers or drug users.
The evidence points to the fact that sunbed addicts might be ‘missing something’ in their lives. Maybe they feel insecure and are using compulsive behaviour to feel better.
All in all, if you want to get tanned, simply spending time in the sun is a much safer option. Using tanning lotions or sprays is another choice that will avoid the harmful rays that sunbeds pump into your skin.
Myths about tanning
There are a lot of myths surrounding sun tanning. As the summer comes into bloom, it’s worth making sure you know the facts!
For one thing: you don’t need to burn to get a tan. Sunburn is a sign that your skin has been damaged. Another myth that should be busted is that tanning yourself on a bed, before you go on holiday, will offer protection from the sun once you get out to your destination. A tan only offers very light protection from the sun – the equivalent of a very mild sun cream.
Many people believe that sunbeds are good for you because they will give you a dose of Vitamin D. In fact, you only need to step outside for a while and eat the right foods to get the amount of Vitamin D that you need.
